Writing Compelling Blog Articles - Fame and Acclaim in the Blogosphere

Lately, everyone thinks that they are a writer. With the internet comes the ability to publish anything that you want to a much larger potential audience than anyone can ever predict. Like the vanity publishers of poorly written books that exist solely to stroke the egos of wannabe authors whom no publishing house will touch, the internet has provided the world with the ability to publish anything. Content, grammar and spelling be damned. Article directories, blogs and other forms of social media have given every housewife, handyman and self proclaimed expert a forum in which they can express their every thought and concern for the whole world to see.

The positive impact of this is that, for any topic that you are interested in, there are at least a few dozen articles and blogs dedicated to exactly that topic. The drawback is that not everybody that can write should. There is an art form to writing a compelling blog article, and as with all other forms of art, not everyone is an artist.

Writing a compelling blog article does not require that you be Shakespeare or Tolkien or even Dr. Seuss. Some of the best writers of all time may very well have made horrible bloggers. A blog article goes through no more rigorous of an editorial process than your own spell check, so it is hard to say how well any of the literary giants would have done without the benefit of an editor to refine their words. What you need to figure out is who you wish to say it to. Who are you hoping will read it? As with any other form of writing, the first thing that you need to consider is your audience. Are you writing for intellectuals and scholars? Then you had better elevate your language to that level. Are you writing for everyman? Then a more casual tone is called for. Knowing who you envision reading your article is very important in formulating how you will say what you are going to say.

The next step in writing a compelling blog article is to ask yourself why you want to write it. Is it a call to action? Are you hoping to make people laugh? Are you beaming with pride about something? Are you trying to teach others something? Figuring out your motivation for writing your blog article will help you to set the tone. By definition, blogs are an informal form of written communication. They are most often written in a casual, perhaps even conversational tone, and are expected to echo the personality of the person writing them.
